Picking the Perfect Font Design
August 16, 2018Solopreneurs, entrepreneurs who independently run their own business, are consistently finding occupational and financial successes when they cut the corporate strings and make their own rules. So, when you decide to work for yourself, where do you start?
Here are some tips for getting started as a solopreneur.
Know What You Want from Your Business
Before you decide whether to hire a team or go solo, you have to decide what the goal is for you and your business. If you want your business to grow into a huge operation, scaling is probably the way to go. But if you prefer building and running a business by yourself, it’s time to become a solopreneur. Be certain about your goals and your plan of action for achieving them.
Hold Yourself Accountable
Because you’re going to be running a business by yourself, you’re going to have to possess—or at least start developing—a strong sense of responsibility and a dedicated work ethic. You’re the only person you can count on to complete tasks correctly and on time. Whether it be with a rewards system or a strict schedule, you’ll have to find a way to hold yourself accountable.
Automate Wherever Possible
For solopreneurs, the biggest time consumers are often customer service, email marketing, website management, and content creation. By automating some of these processes, you’ll save yourself loads of time and maintain your sanity. Whether you outsource or depend on machine processes, automation is key.
Jump on New Opportunities
One of the best benefits of being a solopreneur is that you don’t have to consult with anyone else before taking advantage of an opportunity or making a big decision. So, if an opportunity that seems beneficial to your business arises, jump on it quickly!
Build a Wide Range of Skills
You likely started your solo business based on an existing skill set—web design, graphic design, etc—but in order to be a solopreneur, you have to build skills that serve all areas of your business. You must work hard to build skills like marketing and accounting, even if they don’t come naturally to you.
Be Prepared for Inconsistent Income
When you’re running a business yourself, you have to accept that on days that you’re sick, on vacation, or just experiencing a sales slump, you might make significantly less than you usually do. That’s why it’s important to have a backup savings account or another revenue stream to help offset those challenging times.
Constantly Learn from Your Experiences
It’s impossible to go into a new venture as an expert in everything. You must move forward with an open mind; be willing to learn about new business aspects any chance you get. Learn from your mistakes. Learn from your experiences. What you choose to take from your experiences will aid you in your future endeavors.
Join Online Communities of Solopreneurs
While at its core, being a solopreneur means building and running a business by yourself, it doesn’t mean that you have to be entirely alone on your journey. Interacting with a community of like-minded people will help keep you motivated and engaged.
